Summer Safety Tips For Your Eyes

With the warm summer months rolling in, it's impossible not to want to spend every waking minute outside. The bright sun makes everything better as you soak up that vitamin D. However, vitamin D isn't the only thing the sun produces. Blinding UV rays and visible light glares cast beams of light in every direction. UV rays, which consist of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays, emit from the sun to glare directly into your eyes. Though UVC rays don't penetrate the earth's atmosphere, UVA and UVB rays can cause severe damage to your eyes. Though the situation seems dire, you can still avoid lifelong eye disease and take advantage of the warm sun.

How to Protect Your Eyes

  1.  Sunglasses

Sunglasses, specifically those made to block UV rays, are your best defenses when facing the sun's ultraviolet rays. Look for sunglasses with a label that reads "UV 400," which provides the best protection. Also, select sunglasses which block 75-90% of visible light to reduce the damage glare causes. Polarized lenses are necessary for all outdoor activities.

  1. Wear a Hat

Though sunglasses are the best protection for your eyes, light can still seep through the tops and sides of the lenses. To reduce the chance of light filtering around the lenses, wear a broad-brimmed hat to block them.

  1. UV-Blocking Contact Lenses

For an added layer of protection, get special contact lenses that block UV rays. However, these are still best paired with sunglasses that also block UV rays and reduce glare.

  1. Use Moisturizing Eye Drops

The sun's UV rays aren't the only thing that can cause damage to your eye. The hot air can deplete your eye of its natural moisture and lead to a condition called "dry eyes." To prevent this from happening, use moisturizing eye drops as an added step to your eye care routine.

  1. Wear Goggles When Swimming

Water can have irritants and germs that cause major issues when they get into your eyes. Additionally, opening your eyes underwater will cause strain and burning, ultimately leading to the wear and tear of your eyes. Wear goggles to keep the water at bay and away from your sensitive eyes. This will also help keep watered-down sunscreen from slipping into your eyes.
