Early Detection of Macular Degeneration Preventive Care
Whether you’ve had perfect vision your entire life or not, good vision is not a given for anyone. This is especially true for older generations and the elderly, who are likely to begin losing their vision as they age. The elderly are particularly at risk for Macular Degeneration, which can severely affect vision and potentially cause blindness.
At Oxford Family Vision Clinic, we are dedicated to caring for your sight as best we can by informing our patients how to protect their vision. Here are some facts and tips about Macular Degeneration:
What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular Degeneration is a disease of the macula, a central part of your retina which can affect your central vision. It is the leading cause of blindness in adults over the age of 75, however, does not cause total blindness, as it targets only your central vision and not your peripheral vision.
What are the early signs and symptoms of Macular Degeneration?
During the early stages of Macular Degeneration, you may not experience any symptoms or signs. Symptoms of an intermediate stage include:
Blurred central vision
Blind spots
Difficulty seeing color or details
Distorted visual field
Inability to see contrasts in textures
Intolerance in changing light levels, or needing more light than usual
Difficulty with depth perception
Are there any risk factors for Macular Degeneration?
Although doctors are still unsure of the causes of Macular Degeneration, they have identified some risk factors that may make you more vulnerable to developing macular degeneration, such as:
Age- older populations are more vulnerable than other age groups.
Familial History- it’s possible to be carried on genetically.
Gender- Generally speaking, females are more likely to develop it than males.
Race- White/Caucasians are more likely to develop it than other races.
Lifestyle Choices- weight, smoking, sun exposure, and inactivity are all factors that could increase your chances of developing it.
Eye Color- lighter-colored eyes seem to develop it more.
Can I prevent Macular Degeneration?
There is no known “cure” for macular degeneration, but you can help prevent it by doing these things:
Controlling your blood pressure
Regular and frequent exercise, maintaining a healthy weight
Eating a balanced and nutritious diet
Protecting your eyes from sunlight with sunglasses, hats, etc.
Getting regular eye exams- this may be the most important step you can take! Though you may not have symptoms at an early stage of macular degeneration, doctors may see signs of it in an eye exam and will be able to start treatment before it gets any worse.
